This website is divided into two main parts: One is for people coping with serious illnesses or injuries. The other is for people who have experienced the death of a loved one.

The underlying theme in both parts it that when we have lost something of great value, whether it be a loved one, our health, our pet, our job, or maybe just our way in life, we experience grief over that loss.

We must figure out to cope with our loss and grief before we can move forward. (I have two multi-media presentations that many people have found very helpful. If you like them and find them helpful let your friends know about them. They are listed in the left column.)

This is not an easy task. Many people do not accomplish it. They become bitter and angry and crushed. But that is not an inevitable result of loss and grief.

If you do not want to end up in that situation, you must remember:

You are not the mercy of that grief!

You do not have to be devoured by your loss.

A NEW SONG

With all the recent events such as Virginia Tech and the bus accident for the Bluffton students and the death of some police officers in my hometown and a good friend's hometown as well as the ongoing losses in Iraq I wrote a song that I believe captures just a glimpse of hope even during incredibly difficult times. For some people it still might be too early to even entertain thoughts of hope, while others might be searching desperately for some hope in the increasing madness that is going on. The singer is one of my daughters who is a student at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. The song is called I'll be inside your smile.

My name is Dr. Scott Sheperd. I have worked for over 30 years with people who have experienced all types of loss, ranging from the murder and suicide of their children, to the catastrophic loss of personal health, to losing a career.

I have seen many of these people survive these losses and grow as human beings. I have also seen many of them become bitter and full of resentment or perhaps crushed under the pressure that they experienced from their situation.

I've learned much from working with these people, and I want to help others going through their own grief and emotional pain by sharing my knowledge through this very simple website.
