Surviving With Spirit
Coping with Illness and/or Injury
When you find out you
have a serious illness, or when you have been injured and your life is now totally different than it
was just a short while ago, it is very tempting to ask, "Why Me?". It is probably the worst question
you can ask.
Why?
Once reason is that if you've been engaging in behavior that you know
probably helped bring about your problem, you will be tempted to beat on yourself for being an idiot.
That will not help
On the other hand, if you believe you have been doing things the right way
and still got this illness or injury or lost a loved one, you will be tempted to be angry and bitter
toward life or God or whatever. That also will not help.
The question you need to ask when
faced with these problems is not "Why me?", but rather, "What Now?"
That question leads to,
"What do I need to do? Who do I need to talk to? What are my options?"
Looking back or looking for
something or someone to blame wastes your time and energy. That is time and energy you cannot afford
to waste.
Now more than ever, you must look forward.
I know. I know. Not looking backward
or not getting bitter is easier said than done. I also know, because I have seen many people do it,
that it is possible to do it. I have seen many people look forward even when forward didn't look
that good.
